Acer shows 7-inch Android tablet, e-readers and 720p phone
Acer uses the product launch today to reveal a surprise entry into the tablet arena. CEO Gianfranco Lanci briefly showed a 7-inch tablet running Android and with a hardware keyboard underneath. He gave no other details of the device in question, but said he would send in the fall and suggested that it would have 3G and sell through the operators with subsidized prices.
The design identified by Shufflegazine marks the Acer’s official entry into tablet and the first companies in Taiwan to show its rivalry against the IPAD. ASUS teased Eee Pad launching for the summer, but has yet to confirm details. Asus and MSI are ready to show their first real entry tablet at Computex on June 1st, but direct competition IPAD can be left out after pressure from Intel and Microsoft to show Windows-based tablets Atom.
Besides the touch screen device, most attention has been devoted to LumiRead, Acer’s first e-reader. It shares a similar design of the tablet, but uses a 6-inch display electronic paper and a joystick for input. The unique touch is a scanner capable of recognizing the ISBNs and use of physical books as the source of a wish list for downloads. Barnes & Noble is giving access to its online store, a statement referring to the United States release; Libri.de provide books in Europe, and founder gives Chinese titles.
The event also included the official presentation of Liquid Stream, a smartphone with AMOLED screen of Android, a 5 megapixel camera recording 720p, HDMI video and Dolby Surround Mobile. A couple of computers have been presented as the Aspire Z5710, a 23-inch multi-touch all-in-one desktop, and the Aspire 5745P, a 15.6-inch laptop with dedicated graphics card Intel. Further details of these were not immediately available.
