AMD gives up mobile graphics to Qualcomm

AMD announced on Tuesday it has sold most of its Imageon mobile graphics business moving to Qualcomm. The agreement of approximately $ 65 million gives the company the chip design intellectual property rights, the ability to recruit workers from AMD related, and other resources. In fact, video puts AMD category of hand, leaving the company to focus on the desktop and laptop computers for its Radeon graphics.

Qualcomm describes the acquisition of the graphics for mobile devices as a step towards improving its range of systems on chip, mobile phones, which many powers and handheld devices and should significantly improve performance in 2D and 3D once the AMD’s technology is integrated into the hardware. Qualcomm is based on both 3G and 4G core, eventually, cell phones and also the level of performance netbook with its Snapdragon processors.

AMD interprets the selloff as an opportunity to focus on its most successful companies that allows the partial acquisition, just days after announcing it will cut 1,100 jobs to reverse the fortunes of the depreciation of the company. The company continues its fight against Intel in the PC market and only release more competitive processors such as the Phenom II, although the Radeon HD line is good.
